Family Systems Therapy

Learning how to reform the relationships and mend the family dynamics is not as difficult as one might believe. Validation, respect, and learning how to be an individual while a family unit are keys components to life. To be successful the family must be willing to engage in and practice the skills they learn in the therapeutic process.

A foundation of learning effective communication is important; becoming aware of our non-verbal communication, called meta-communication, can reduce emotional damage to our loved ones and heal family dynamics.

Changing Behaviors in Children

Understanding how to redirect a child when they are emotional and acting out, requires a parent to understand the child’s behavior. Sometimes during these outbursts, as a parent we are just trying to survive the draining situation and lack skills necessary to defuse the behavior.

Learning about how a child’s brain interprets information and having techniques to redirect the emotional outburst is essential in changing unwanted behaviors. Easy to use techniques provide you new skills that you can use immediately and break the draining cycle.

Treatment Modalities
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
Dialectical behavior therapy, DBT, was developed by Marsha Linehan, PhD. DBT techniques offer an individual additional life coping skills and strategies, to assist them in developing a life that they experience as worth living. DBT skills include skills for mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT, was developed by American psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck. CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and/or events. CBT teaches that we can change the way we think and the way we behave, even if the situation does not change that we are reacting to.
